Our story started with a realisation:

Thousands of hard-working Aussies were being exploited, and no-one was doing anything about it.

Our founder was an Airbnb host, just like you.

He loved the idea of holiday rentals, the way you could open your home to strangers from every corner of the globe, shaping their holiday memories and bringing them closer to the destination they’d come to explore.

And, as a traveller, he loved Airbnb too – the affordability, the convenience, the easy online booking platform.

But something didn’t make sense.

For every guest he hosted, he had to pay Airbnb up to 22% of the booking fee. Income taxes, land rates, power and water, property upkeep, insurance were already chewing into his profits, and then a big overseas company was taking a slice of the pie as well.

He started thinking.

Most of his guests were return visitors. They loved his property, they loved his service, and they always wanted to come back for more. It wasn’t Airbnb bringing them back – it was him. But he still had to pay Airbnb for every night they stayed.

It wasn’t fair, but Airbnb and all the other online travel agencies were too big to ignore. A home-sharing business just wasn’t viable unless you paid all those overseas corporations the tolls they demanded, because otherwise guests would never find you.

That’s when our founder had a lightbulb moment. What if he let Airbnb and the other OTAs help him find guests, but then offered those same guests an alternate way to rebook?

A website – a place he could personalise to match his property, where he could view bookings from all the different OTAs in one place, where he could effortlessly schedule promotions, manage cancellations and accept payments.

It would be a website designed to help hosts, not profit off them.

There would be no commission. No big fees. No gatekeepers.

Just ordinary owners taking back control of their businesses.

And that’s how uNiche was born.
